Steelers Move Jalen Ramsey to Safety, Paving the Way to Land Ex-Raiders' CB with 10 Pass Breakups

Jack Jones' instant impact: How the Raiders cornerback has been worth the risk - The Athletic

Pittsburgh, PA – July 16, 2025

The Steelers’ secondary is about to look a lot different in 2025, and the front office’s latest chess move could reshape the defense for years to come. In a bold shift, Pittsburgh is set to deploy All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey at free safety—freeing up a prime opportunity at cornerback for one of this year’s most intriguing free agents: Jack Jones.

The move comes just months after the Steelers acquired Ramsey in a blockbuster trade with the Dolphins, and subsequently parted ways with star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. With Ramsey’s elite instincts and range, Pittsburgh’s coaching staff believes he can anchor the back end—mirroring the career trajectory of other legendary corners who thrived after moving to safety.

But it’s the vacancy at outside cornerback that’s drawn attention, especially with Jack Jones still available on the open market. Once a top prospect out of USC and Arizona State, Jones flashed his elite man coverage skills and ball-hawking instincts during stints with the Patriots and Raiders. While disciplinary issues and injuries have clouded his journey, few doubt his talent when he’s focused and healthy.

Released by Las Vegas in April, Jones is coming off a career-best 2024 season: 17 games (16 starts), 69 tackles, 16 pass deflections, 3 interceptions, and—most notably—10 pass breakups, ranking sixth among all NFL corners. While his PFF grade was a modest 53.9, his ability to disrupt passing lanes and make plays on the ball has kept him near the top of free agent wish lists.

“He’s one of those guys who can change a game in a single snap—if he stays locked in,” one AFC scout told ESPN. “His issues are well-documented, but his production in 2024—especially with pass breakups—shows what he can do in the right system.”

The Steelers, needing a dynamic playmaker and competition at corner, are reportedly exploring a short-term, prove-it deal with Jones. Head coach Mike Tomlin is known for giving second chances to talented players with something to prove, and the move to add Jones could bring an edge to a defense that prides itself on physicality and swagger.

For Jones, who’s still just 28 and ranked among the top available CBs, Pittsburgh could offer the stability, coaching, and high-stakes environment needed to reach his potential. Despite a rocky path—marked by suspensions, injuries, and off-field drama—he remains a tantalizing option for any team willing to take the risk.

With Ramsey roaming deep and a player like Jones locking down the outside, the Steelers’ secondary could quickly become one of the most unpredictable—and dangerous—in the AFC. And for a franchise chasing another playoff run, bold moves like this could make all the difference.
