Proposed Steelers trade brings in $4 million former starting quarterback amid Aaron Rodgers wait

Sam Howell 'Showed What Type Of Quarterback He Is' In Seahawks' Second Preseason Game

The Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback situation is still surrounded with uncertainty heading into Round 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday. The team is waiting on Aaron Rodgers to make a decision regarding his football future, but based on his recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers doesn't seem in a rush to decide his playing future.

Pittsburgh must figure out the quarterback situation sooner rather than later, and though they could have their eyes set on a certain signal-caller in the draft, CBS Sports' Tyler Sullivan and Jared Dubin lists the Steelers as a potential landing spot for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Howell.

"The Steelers currently have the NFL's most in-flux quarterback situation. Unless and until Aaron Rodgers signs a contract with Pittsburgh, its only quarterbacks are Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson. That's ... not ideal. Neither is Howell, obviously, but he at least has a higher floor than Thompson and a higher ceiling than Rudolph," Sullivan wrote.

Sam Howell Enjoys Solid Outing In Seahawks Debut

Howell could be moved sometime during the draft. The Seahawks recently signed Drew Lock to serve as Sam Darnold's backup, and general manager John Schneider has already stated that Seattle has received some calls on Howell.

Though he isn't a starting-caliber signal-caller, adding Howell to the roster would be a logical move by Pittsburgh. The 24-year-old has starting experience and could compete for the backup role with Mason Rudolph.

Additionally, a late Day 3 pick should be enough to acquire the 2022 fifth-round pick in a trade with the Seahawks. Howell didn't start a single game last season, so his trade value shouldn't be too high.

The Steelers could eventually sign Rodgers and select a quarterback in the draft, but nothing is guaranteed at this point. General manager Omar Khan should consider taking a flyer on Sam Howell, and see if he can provide some value for Pittsburgh in 2025.
