Buffalo Native RB’s Season Ends After Preseason Injury — Dolphins Lose Key Back, Bills Fans Send Support

Dolphins RB Alexander Mattison suffered season-ending neck injury

Miami, FL – The Miami Dolphins have lost running back Alexander Mattison for the entire 2025 NFL season after a neck injury in Sunday’s preseason matchup against the Chicago Bears was confirmed to require surgery.

Mattison, a proud Buffalo native whose football roots run deep in Western New York, went down on a 21-yard reception midway through the first half. The hit left him clutching his neck and shoulder area, prompting immediate attention from the Dolphins’ medical staff.

He was taken to a nearby Chicago hospital, where scans revealed the need for surgical intervention. While the injury is serious, sources close to the team indicate Mattison is expected to make a full recovery.

The 27-year-old signed a one-year deal with Miami earlier this offseason after spending the 2024 campaign with the Las Vegas Raiders, appearing in 14 games with seven starts. Before that, he spent five seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, rushing for over 2,700 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Head coach Mike McDaniel initially described the injury as “neck and shoulder soreness” postgame, making Monday’s confirmation of a season-ending procedure all the more shocking.

"Dolphins RB Alexander Mattison has a neck injury that requires surgery, per sources," ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported. "He’s expected to make a full recovery but will be out for the 2025 season. Has full strength and motion."

With Mattison sidelined, Miami’s backfield will rely on De’Von Achane, Jaylen Wright, and rookie Ollie Gordon, while veteran Jamaal Williams is reportedly working out with the team as a possible addition.

For Mattison, this setback is more than just a professional hurdle — it’s a blow felt back home in Buffalo, where Bills Mafia is showing love and support during his toughest battle yet.
