James Cook, the electrifying running back of the Buffalo Bills, has been a cornerstone of their offense since 2022. However, his future with the team beyond the 2025 season is increasingly uncertain as contract extension talks hit a roadblock.
Cook, entering the final year of his rookie deal, is seeking a new contract valued at around $45 million, aiming to surpass Alvin Kamara’s $15 million annual average and rank among the NFL’s top-paid running backs. At 25, his youth and production make him a prime candidate for a blockbuster deal.
“Cook’s impact is undeniable, but the talks are stalled,” said The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia. “The Bills and Cook remain far apart on a new agreement.”
In 2024, Cook led the league with 16 rushing touchdowns, amassing over 1,000 yards for the second consecutive year. His 44 receptions for 445 yards in 2023 showcased his dual-threat prowess, cementing his role in Joe Brady’s offense alongside Josh Allen.
“We’re navigating a tight cap,” Brandon Beane told reporters. “Cook’s value is clear, but we’ve got other priorities to balance.”
The Bills, with a $5.3 million cap space, face tough decisions, as extensions for Khalil Shakir, Greg Rousseau, and Christian Benford loom. The running back market’s decline, coupled with Cook’s high $15 million ask, complicates negotiations, potentially sidelining him.
Cook’s participation in the Bills’ offseason program, starting Tuesday, remains uncertain. His absence could signal frustration, though Sean McDermott hopes his star back will join Ray Davis and Ty Johnson to prepare for a Super Bowl push against the Chiefs.
With the 2025 NFL Draft approaching, Beane eyes prospects like Quinshon Judkins as a fallback if Cook departs. For now, Cook’s future in Buffalo hangs in the balance. Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp for updates.
