San Francisco, CA – July 27, 2025
Training camp intensity hit a boiling point for the 49ers this week as two seventh-round rookies, Connor Colby and Junior Bergen, almost came to blows during a heated roster battle.
Tempers flared as Colby, a versatile lineman out of Iowa, and Bergen, a speedy Montana receiver, traded sharp words over a missed assignment before teammates and coaches quickly intervened.
But it was Nick Bosa who commanded the moment. The All-Pro defender cut through the tension and called the rookies together in front of the entire team.
"In San Francisco, it doesn’t matter what round you were drafted in. Show up early, shut up, and go to work. That’s how you earn your helmet," Bosa declared, leaving no doubt about the standard in the Bay.
Colby, known for his flexibility on the O-line, is locked in a battle for a backup spot, while Bergen is hoping to carve out a role as a punt returner and special teamer.
Veterans privately supported Bosa’s stance, emphasizing that while competition is healthy, respect for the process and teammates is non-negotiable.
Coaches acknowledged the hunger among the rookies, but stressed that emotion must be channeled into work ethic—not drama—if anyone hopes to stick in one of the league’s toughest locker rooms.
Fans on social media reacted swiftly, with many praising Bosa’s leadership and the 49ers’ unyielding culture, while others debated whether the flare-up could foreshadow deeper roster friction.
As the preseason approaches, all eyes will be on Colby and Bergen to see if they heed Bosa’s message and channel their energy toward earning the right to wear the helmet in San Francisco.
