Stefon Diggs, former Buffalo Bills star, has ignited controversy by urging James Cook to ditch Buffalo, branding the Bills the “NFL’s stingiest team” for their reluctance to pay top salaries. Diggs pointed Cook toward the New England Patriots, where he believes the running back could thrive.
Cook, a two-time Pro Bowler, demanded a $15 million annual extension, but the Bills countered with $12 million, stalling talks. His sale of his Orchard Park home fueled trade rumors, with free agency looming in 2026 if no deal is reached.
“Cook deserves star money,” Diggs told The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia. “The Bills are too cheap. The Patriots would value him properly.”
In 2024, Cook led the NFL with 16 rushing touchdowns, surpassing 1,000 yards for the second straight year. His 44 receptions for 445 yards in 2023 made him a dual-threat cornerstone in Joe Brady’s offense alongside Josh Allen, amplifying his contract frustrations.
“Diggs nails the market reality,” said NFL Network’s Bucky Brooks. “If the Bills won’t pay, Cook could find a home with the Patriots.”
The Patriots, with $45 million in 2025 cap space, are rebuilding around Drake Maye and could target Cook to replace Rhamondre Stevenson, a 2026 free agent. Cook’s 4.5-second 40-yard dash and pass-catching skills would elevate Alex Van Pelt’s offense.
The Bills, limited to $5.3 million in cap space, prioritize extensions for Khalil Shakir, Greg Rousseau, and Christian Benford, alongside signings like Justin Simmons and Tre’Davious White. Keeping Cook or losing him will shape their 2025 campaign, as Brandon Beane eyes draft prospect Maxwell Hairston.
Diggs, traded by the Bills in 2024 amid his own disputes, has stirred the pot on draft eve. Will Cook stay or seek a new path? Sean McDermott’s squad needs stability to challenge the Chiefs.
