REPORT: Brad Holmes Wants to Build Best WR Trio in NFL with Broncos Star

What we have learned about draft strategy of Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes

Detroit, MI – April 15, 2025, 04:07 AM PDT

Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes is reportedly eyeing a blockbuster trade to create the NFL’s premier wide receiver trio by acquiring Carolina Panthers star Courtland Sutton.

Sources told ESPN on Monday that Holmes is in advanced talks to bring Sutton to Detroit, aiming to elevate an offense that ranked among the league’s best in 2024.

The Lions, coming off a 15-2 season, feature Amon-Ra St. Brown with 1,400 yards and Jameson Williams with 1,001 yards, but Holmes views Sutton as the final piece for an elite trio.

Sutton, a 6’4”, 216-pound receiver, has been a standout since being drafted by Denver in 2018, totaling 379 receptions for 5,340 yards and 32 touchdowns over seven seasons, including a Pro Bowl nod in 2019.

In 2024, Sutton delivered 81 catches for 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns, earning a 74.3 PFF grade, ranking 33rd among NFL wide receivers. His size and contested-catch ability shine.

With a $17.4 million cap hit in the final year of his contract, Sutton could be had for a third-round pick, as Carolina rebuilds around Xavier Legette and Adam Thielen’s expiring deal.

Rookie Report: Courtland Sutton grows up fast

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport notes Sutton’s addition would open the field for St. Brown and Williams, forcing defenses to spread coverage while giving Jared Goff a towering red-zone target.

With $42.36 million in cap space, Detroit can absorb Sutton’s deal and secure him long-term, ensuring stability if Williams’ fifth-year option isn’t picked up (Spotrac). The Lions’ Super Bowl window demands such a move. As the April 24 draft approaches, Holmes’ pursuit of Sutton could redefine Detroit’s offense as unstoppable.
