Los Angeles, CA – May 14, 2025 – Amazon Prime Video has made a major announcement, revealing that Oscar-winning actor Tom Hardy will portray the late Green Bay Packers head coach Vince Lombardi in the upcoming biopic "Lombardi: The Ice Bowl Legend". Ryan Gosling, known for his roles in "La La Land" and "Drive," will star as legendary Packers quarterback Bart Starr. The film is slated for release sometime next year, in 2026, marking a significant addition to Prime’s growing slate of sports-themed content.
Hardy, who won an Academy Award for "The Revenant," will bring his intense presence to Lombardi, the architect of the Packers’ dynasty from 1959 to 1967. Lombardi led Green Bay to five NFL Championships and the first two Super Bowls, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. “Tom Hardy captures the essence of Lombardi’s relentless drive and leadership,” director Christopher Nolan told Variety. “This film will honor his impact on the game and the city of Green Bay.”
Gosling, meanwhile, will embody Bart Starr, Lombardi’s quarterback and the MVP of Super Bowl I. Starr’s 24,718 passing yards and 152 touchdowns, combined with his clutch performance in the Ice Bowl, make him a fitting counterpart to Lombardi’s story. “Ryan’s ability to portray complex characters will bring Starr’s quiet determination to life,” Nolan added.
The announcement comes as Prime continues to expand its sports offerings, following successes like "Challengers" and "For the Win: NWSL." Fans on X are already buzzing: “Hardy as Lombardi? This is going to be iconic!” tweeted one, while another said, “Gosling and Hardy together? Can’t wait for 2026.” NFL Network’s Peter Schrager noted, “Prime’s commitment to sports storytelling is unmatched.”
Filming is set to begin in June 2025, with locations including Lambeau Field and Green Bay, Wisconsin. As the NFL Draft and OTAs dominate headlines, this biopic adds a layer of anticipation for Packers faithful, celebrating a legacy that continues to inspire.
