Packers Predicted to Sign 25-Year-Old Cornerback Amid Jaire Alexander Uncertainty

REPORT: Packers willing to move star CB Jaire Alexander for the right price

With the 2025 NFL Draft and most of free agency in the rearview mirror, the Green Bay Packers are still looking to solidify their secondary. One surprising name still available on the free agent market is 25-year-old cornerback Asante Samuel Jr.

Samuel’s availability likely stems from a shoulder injury that restricted him to just four games in 2024, where he recorded 13 tackles and two pass deflections. Despite the limited playtime, his youth and prior production make him a compelling option for teams needing cornerback help.

Ryan Smith of Pro Football Focus identified the Green Bay Packers as a potential landing spot for the talented young corner. Smith commented on Samuel’s fit with the team:

"The Packers entered free agency needing depth in their secondary, and recent developments suggest All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander could be on the trade block. No deal was finalized during the draft, but the team could save $6.2 million in cap space by trading him after June 1. Samuel, who played just four games last season due to injury, was a top-30 cornerback in PFF grades in 2022 and 2023, with 20 pass breakups and four interceptions over those years. At 25, he brings youth, pedigree, and proven ability to Green Bay’s defense."

The potential trade of Jaire Alexander could heighten the Packers’ need at cornerback. General Manager Brian Gutekunst addressed the situation post-draft, stating, "We’ve had discussions with teams about Jaire. We’ll make a move when the timing and value align."

Without Alexander, the Packers would likely rely on Eric Stokes, Keisean Nixon, and Carrington Valentine as their primary cornerbacks. The team also selected a cornerback in the sixth round of the 2025 draft, but a rookie is unlikely to step into a starting role immediately.

Samuel’s performance in 2022 and 2023, where he earned top-30 PFF grades and recorded two interceptions each season, underscores his potential to bolster Green Bay’s secondary. While his 2024 season was cut short, his track record suggests he could be a valuable addition.

Spotrac projects Samuel could secure a four-year contract worth $11.5 million annually. However, given his recent injury and the late stage of free agency, the Packers might negotiate a more affordable deal. With approximately $18 million in cap space, per Over The Cap, Green Bay has the financial flexibility to pursue Samuel if they choose.

Signing Samuel would provide the Packers with a young, high-upside cornerback to strengthen their defense, particularly if Alexander’s future with the team remains uncertain.
