Packers eye $20 million veteran, former No. 1 pick to fill major positional need

Panthers release Jadeveon Clowney after one season

The Green Bay Packers are working toward a resolution with cornerback Jaire Alexander. Alexander has been a star during his time in Green Bay, but injuries over the past two seasons have significantly impacted his availability. This offseason, the team has been exploring options to either trade him or restructure his contract in a way that benefits both sides.

"On the contract front, the Packers could want a revised deal that allows Alexander -- who has missed at least 10 games in three of the last four seasons -- to earn his full salary if he's healthy and available in 2025 but protects the team in case the injuries continue," Zach Kruse wrote.

Meanwhile, Green Bay still has an urgent need to address its defensive line. The team failed to fill that hole during the NFL Draft a few weeks ago. However, a prime opportunity emerged Thursday morning when the Carolina Panthers released veteran pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney.

Clowney gained national attention in college after his viral hit against Michigan, where he knocked a player’s helmet off. He was also the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and has had a solid, if nomadic, NFL career.

Whether the Packers will pursue him remains to be seen, but there’s growing belief that signing Clowney could greatly benefit the team.

"The Packers are banking on a lot of youth at edge rusher entering 2025. Lukas Van Ness is an expected starter opposite Rashan Gary, with Kingsley Enagbare, Brenton Cox Jr., Arron Mosby and rookies Barryn Sorrell and Collin Oliver all vying for rotational roles. There is room for a veteran here. A one-year deal would fit Clowney just fine. He's been switching teams and still producing as a player for the last half decade," Kruse wrote on Thursday.

Even on a one-year deal, Clowney could make a major impact—bringing experience to a young group while still contributing at a high level.
