Philadelphia, PA – April 12, 2025, 05:16 AM PDT
The Detroit Lions, an NFC opponent, have proposed a trade to send Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Tanner McKee to the Pittsburgh Steelers, sources told ESPN on Friday.
The Lions, who have Jared Goff as their established QB1, see McKee as a potential franchise quarterback for the Steelers, who have struggled at the position.
McKee, a 2023 sixth-round pick, impressed in limited action for the Eagles, throwing for 323 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions in 2024, including a 269-yard, 2-TD performance against the Giants.
The Steelers, after a 2024 season where they lost four straight games despite making the playoffs, lack a long-term answer at quarterback with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields underperforming.
In the proposed trade, the Lions would acquire McKee from the Eagles for a 2025 fourth-round pick, then send him to the Steelers for a 2025 third-round pick and edge rusher Nick Herbig.
The Lions’ interest in facilitating this trade stems from their desire to bolster their pass rush with Herbig, while the Eagles gain draft capital to address needs at cornerback or offensive line.
Steelers fans on X are intrigued, with @SteelersNation posting, “McKee as QB1? He’s got potential!” while @PittsburghFan said, “Herbig for a QB upgrade—I’m in!”
McKee’s 156.2 passer rating in his NFL debut and his poise under pressure make him a strong candidate to lead the Steelers, who need a fresh start at quarterback.
