Pittsburgh, PA – July 25, 2025
The atmosphere at Steelers camp this summer feels different. There’s renewed energy in the trenches, as coaches quietly monitor the transformation of one young tackle who has become the talk of Latrobe.
Pittsburgh’s offensive line faced tough questions last season. The need for more agility on the edge was obvious, especially with Aaron Rodgers now under center and AFC North defenses ramping up the speed.
Insiders say the shift started in January, right after the playoff exit. While teammates took a break, one lineman disappeared from social media and the city’s food scene. He was determined to change — without fanfare.
The results are impossible to ignore. The Steelers’ starting left tackle showed up at OTAs noticeably slimmer, having lost 20 pounds by cutting out red meat, focusing on plant-based meals, and relying on nuts for fuel between workouts.
Broderick Jones, the 2023 first-rounder, had played every snap last season but allowed six sacks and earned a modest 66.8 grade from PFF. For months, he’d heard the whispers about being “too heavy” for elite pass rushers.
"I watched the film, and I saw the truth — I wasn’t who I said I’d be. And I couldn’t accept that — it was all because I was too slow from my weight. So I dropped 20 pounds and did the work in silence. This year, I’m earning back the name on my jersey — and the trust of Steelers Nation."
Steelers coaches believe Jones’s quicker feet could make a huge difference. With his current weight around 311 pounds, he’s already showing more lateral burst in team drills, and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has praised the “new level of quickness.”
Pittsburgh needs every edge it can get. The left tackle job is as high-pressure as ever, with Jones tasked to protect Rodgers and help spring Najee Harris in the run game. Mistakes last year became learning moments for the young lineman.
If the silent weight loss pays off, Jones could be the anchor Pittsburgh needs to power a playoff run. For now, Steelers Nation is watching closely, hoping a slimmer, faster tackle helps bring another Lombardi Trophy back to the Steel City.
