There’s a different kind of urgency in Allen Park this summer. Inside the Lions’ defensive line room, coaches have zeroed in on a quiet transformation that’s redefining expectations for one of Detroit’s most important young defenders.
Last season, the Lions took a leap forward, but questions remained about their consistency up front. Too often, opponents targeted gaps when the pass rush faded late in games, putting pressure on the defensive tackles to evolve.
For Alim McNeill, that reality stung. After a promising start to his career, the 2024 campaign brought a mixed bag — a respectable five sacks, but a nagging sense that more was possible if he could only get quicker.
The work began as soon as the season ended. Trainers noted McNeill’s absence from Detroit’s usual off-season hangouts. He disappeared from the BBQ circuit and put the soul food on hold, determined to return in peak shape.
By the time OTAs rolled around, the difference was unmistakable. McNeill, once listed at 327 pounds, had quietly shed 22 pounds and now weighed in at a leaner, faster 305. His explosion off the line had Lions staffers buzzing.
Alim McNeill, the third-year tackle, finally addressed the transformation. "I watched the film, and I saw the truth — I wasn’t who I said I’d be. And I couldn’t accept that — it was all because I was too slow from my weight. So I dropped 20 pounds and did the work in silence. This year, I’m earning back the name on my jersey — and the trust of Lions fans in Detroit."
Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn says the results are already showing. McNeill’s first step has noticeably improved, and coaches are confident his new frame will help him recover fully from last year’s late-season ACL scare.
With the Lions pushing for another deep playoff run, McNeill’s ability to anchor the middle and disrupt opposing offenses is more critical than ever. Teammates say his work ethic has inspired the entire locker room.
If the silent grind pays off, Detroit may finally have the defensive leader it’s been searching for. For now, Lions fans are watching, hoping that a lighter, faster McNeill will help bring playoff football back to the Motor City.
