The Detroit Lions are shopping for edge help, and they’re eyeing a castoff from a division foe. After a 15-2 season in 2024-2025 fell short in the playoffs, GM Brad Holmes is exploring options. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports Detroit met with ex-Bears edge rusher DeMarcus Walker, recently released by Chicago.
Walker’s resume intrigues. He signed a three-year, $21 million deal with the Bears in 2023, posting seven sacks over two seasons, including 3.5 sacks and 39 pressures in 2024. His peak came in 2022 with the Titans, notching seven sacks under Shane Bowen—now with the Giants, who also want him.
Detroit’s edge need is dire. Aidan Hutchinson’s 7.5 sacks in five games before a leg injury underscored his value—and the Lions’ thin depth without him. Cutting Za’Darius Smith and relying on injury-prone Marcus Davenport isn’t cutting it.
Walker’s no superstar, but he’s steady. His 2024 numbers show he can rotate effectively, offering depth opposite Hutchinson. The Giants are in the mix, but Detroit’s playoff-ready roster could lure the 30-year-old.
Cap space is tight. With $43-46 million available, Walker’s likely $7-8 million price tag fits, especially after Holmes called Smith’s $11 million “unaffordable.” Big splashes seem off the table.
Fans are split. X’s @LionsPride loves it: “Stealing from the Bears—genius!” But Reddit’s r/detroitlions shrugs: “Depth, not a fix.” After 15 wins, supporters crave a blockbuster, though Walker’s NFC North experience adds intrigue.
The draft looms as an alternative. Names like Mike Green (Marshall) or Donovan Ezeiruaku (Boston College) are mocked to Detroit’s first round, but rookies take time—Walker brings instant stability for a “win-now” squad.
Snagging Walker from Chicago is more than a roster move—it’s a jab. Pair him with Hutchinson, and the Lions’ D-line could rattle the NFC. Detroit’s signaling intent—will it pay off?
