Former Steelers TE Retires After Team Release

Four surprises from the Steelers initial 53-man roster - Steel City Underground

Pittsburgh, PA – April 28, 2025. A former Pittsburgh Steelers tight end, once a vital depth piece in the team’s 2024 campaign, has announced his retirement from the NFL, sources confirmed to ESPN Tuesday. The veteran’s exit, following his release after a single season, closes a gritty chapter for Steeler Nation.

Signed to a one-year, $1.26 million deal last year, the 33-year-old played a supporting role in Pittsburgh’s offense, appearing in 17 games. Overshadowed by stars like Pat Freiermuth and the newly acquired Kyle Pitts, he became a free agent as the Steelers prioritized youth, a decision that led to his abrupt retirement.

It’s time to hang up the cleats, MyCole Pruitt told 93.7 The Fan.

A 2015 fifth-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings, Pruitt carved out a decade-long career, amassing 83 receptions for 898 yards and nine touchdowns across 112 games with six franchises. His 2019 season with Tennessee, where he posted a career-high 90 yards, showcased his knack for clutch plays and blocking.

He was a true pro, coach Mike Tomlin said.

Steelers Tight End Doubtful to Play with Injury

Pruitt’s release, part of Pittsburgh’s cap-saving moves with a $2 million cap, followed a 2024 season where he logged 20% of offensive snaps, catching six passes for 62 yards. As a free agent, he drew no reported offers, prompting his decision to step away from the game.

He gave everything to the game, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said.

Steeler Nation, grappling with departures like Najee Harris, took to X with mixed reactions, praising the veteran’s hustle but noting his limited role. His exit leaves Pittsburgh’s tight end room centered on Freiermuth, Pitts, and Darnell Washington, ready for a 2025 push.

His legacy is his heart, NFL analyst Matt Miller noted.

With draft picks like Quin Ewers fueling hope, Pruitt’s quiet retirement marks the end of an unsung journey. From Pittsburgh’s sidelines to the NFL’s grind, the former Steeler leaves behind a legacy of resilience, retiring on his own terms.
