Green Bay, WI – February 4, 2025 – Micah Hyde, a former Green Bay Packers defensive back and two-time Pro Bowl selection, announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday, concluding a remarkable 12-year career. The 34-year-old, drafted by the Packers in the fifth round (No. 159 overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft, expressed gratitude to Green Bay with a poignant five-word message: “Thank you, Packers, for believing.”
Hyde’s four seasons with the Packers (2013–2016) laid the foundation for his successful career. Appearing in 63 regular-season games with 33 starts, he amassed 228 tackles, six interceptions, 24 pass deflections, four sacks, and one forced fumble. His special teams prowess shone through with 55 punt returns for 531 yards, including a memorable 93-yard touchdown return against the Chicago Bears in 2013. In five playoff games with Green Bay, Hyde contributed 14 tackles and one pass deflection, notably during the 2014 NFC Divisional Playoff victory over the Dallas Cowboys.
After signing with the Buffalo Bills in 2017, Hyde elevated his game, earning second-team All-Pro honors in 2017 and 2021 and Pro Bowl selections in both years. His career totals include 644 tackles, 24 interceptions, 66 pass deflections, five sacks, and five touchdowns (three punt returns, one kickoff return, and one pick-six). Hyde’s leadership and community work, including his Imagine For Youth Foundation, made him a beloved figure in Buffalo. He briefly returned to the Bills’ practice squad in December 2024, mentoring younger players before retiring after the team’s 32-29 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2024 AFC Championship Game.
In an emotional Instagram post, Hyde reflected on his journey from Fostoria, Ohio, to the NFL. “The goal was to have an impact,” he wrote. “That was one helluva dream.” Addressing the Packers directly, Hyde credited the organization for his start: “Green Bay took a chance on me, a fifth-rounder from Iowa. They helped me grow into the player and person I became. Those years at Lambeau shaped me.”
Hyde’s versatility as a safety, slot corner, and returner defined his Packers tenure. Fans cherish moments like his 75-yard punt return touchdown against the Miami Dolphins in 2014 and his three-interception, two-fumble-recovery season in 2015. His football IQ and clutch plays earned him respect as one of Green Bay’s standout draft steals.
Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst praised Hyde’s impact: “Micah brought energy and professionalism to our team. His contributions in the secondary and on special teams were invaluable, and we’re proud of his remarkable career.”
As Hyde transitions to life after football, he plans to continue his charity work, including his annual softball game in Buffalo. His legacy with the Packers and Bills reflects a career of resilience, adaptability, and gratitude. The five-word message to Green Bay encapsulates his appreciation for the organization that launched his NFL journey.
