Philadelphia, PA – September 15, 2025 – The Philadelphia Eagles, basking in their Super Bowl LIX glory, have immortalized another legend. In a heartfelt ceremony, the team retired a jersey number to honor a titan whose ironclad protection defined an era of gridiron dominance.
Jason Peters, the 9-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle, saw his No. 71 retired at Lincoln Financial Field. The 44-year-old announced his retirement on April 30, 2025, ending a 17-year NFL odyssey that cemented his status as an Eagles icon.
Peters, a Super Bowl LII champion, anchored the line from 2004-2020, starting 168 games. His 92,3 PFF grade in 2011 and 2 sacks allowed in 2017’s title run showcased unmatched prowess. A Hall of Fame lock, he joins elite company.
“He’s our rock,” coach Nick Sirianni said. Lane Johnson, a fellow tackle titan, added, “Jason taught us toughness.” Peters’ 9 Pro Bowls and 2 First-team All-Pros forged a legacy, shielding Donovan McNabb and Jalen Hurts with ferocity.
The ceremony, before a roaring crowd, saw Jake Elliott’s clutch kicks echo Peters’ reliability. His No. 71, last worn in 2020, now hangs eternally, a tribute to the undrafted gem who rose from Arkansas to immortality.
Zach Ertz’s Commanders revival and Carson Wentz’s Cowboys threat loom, but Peters’ honor galvanizes Philly. Saquon Barkley’s 2,005 yards owe much to linemen inspired by Peters’ grit, fueling dreams of another Broad Street parade.
This marks the 10th jersey retired by the Eagles, joining:
-
No. 5: Donovan McNabb, QB, 6-time Pro Bowler (retired 2013).
-
No. 15: Steve Van Buren, RB, 2-time NFL champion (1951).
-
