Dallas, TX – May 4, 2025 – The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly pursuing a trade for Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson, dubbed “the odd man out” in Green Bay, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer. With their receiver depth lacking a true big-play threat, the Cowboys see Watson as a prime target to bolster Dak Prescott’s offense after passing on other options in the 2025 NFL Draft.
The Packers’ selection of Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden at No. 23 overall has reshaped their depth chart, pushing Watson, their 2022 second-round pick (No. 34 overall), down to fourth string. Behind Jayden Reed, Golden, and Romeo Doubs, Watson faces further competition from rookie Savion Williams, veteran Dontayvion Wicks, and free-agent addition Mecole Hardman. With Watson’s contract expiring after the 2025 season and his role diminishing, Green Bay may be open to a trade.
Watson, 26, showcased his potential early in his career, highlighted by a six-touchdown stretch over three games in 2022, including a standout performance against the Philadelphia Eagles. Despite injuries and inconsistent production, he’s maintained 600+ yards per season, leveraging his elite speed (4.36-second 40-yard dash) and 6’4” frame. “Watson’s a deep threat Dallas desperately needs,” said NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah. “He’d thrive with Prescott’s arm.”
The Cowboys, who missed out on Watson in 2022 by selecting Tyler Smith 10 picks earlier, now have a second chance. Their current receiver group—led by CeeDee Lamb—lacks a consistent WR2, with Brandin Cooks aging and Jalen Tolbert unproven. Watson’s size and speed could complement Lamb, creating a dynamic duo for Dallas’ playoff push. A trade could cost as little as a fourth-round pick, given Watson’s expiring deal and Green Bay’s depth.
However, risks remain. Watson’s injury history, including a torn ACL in January 2025, raises concerns, though coach Matt LaFleur noted his “outstanding” recovery. For Dallas, the move aligns with their strategy of targeting veterans like Amari Cooper or Keenan Allen, but at a lower cost.
If the trade materializes, Watson could reignite his career in Dallas, giving the Cowboys a much-needed offensive spark. For now, negotiations are ongoing, with Green Bay weighing their options ahead of the 2025 season.
