Chiefs Land Raiders Free Agent as Insurance for Cornerbacks Room

Raiders release CB Jack Jones after attempting to trade him

Kansas City, MO – May 3, 2025

The Kansas City Chiefs bolstered their secondary Friday, signing former Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Jack Jones to a one-year, $2 million deal, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The 27-year-old, who revived his career with the Raiders in 2023, joins Kansas City to provide depth after a 40-22 Super Bowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jones, a 2022 fourth-round pick, shone in 2023 with a 56.3% completion rate and 63.0 passer rating allowed over seven games. Despite a 2024 dip—62.8% completion rate and 98.5 passer rating—his starting-caliber numbers fit Steve Spagnuolo’s aggressive scheme. “Jack’s a competitor,” coach Andy Reid told reporters, eyeing Jones as insurance behind Trent McDuffie and Kristian Fulton.

Chiefs receive: CB Jack Jones on a one-year, $2 million contract ($2 million cap hit in 2025).
Raiders’ role: Jones, an unrestricted free agent, was not re-signed after his 2024 contract expired.

With $12.7 million in cap space, Kansas City absorbed Jones’ $2 million hit, fueled by cuts to Joshua Williams, Mike Danna, and Nikko Remigio. The Chiefs, having drafted Josh Simmons, Omarr Norman-Lott, Ashton Gillotte, Nohl Williams, Jalen Royals, Jeffrey Bassa, and Brashard Smith, needed secondary depth with Jaylen Watson and Nazeeh Johnson nearing free agency. Jones, competing with rookie Nohl Williams, strengthens a unit that allowed 4,012 passing yards in 2024.

“Jack’s our edge,” GM Brett Veach said. The Raiders, rebuilding after a 2-15 season, let Jones walk. With three remaining picks, including No. 226, Kansas City targets receiver depth to replace DeAndre Hopkins. Jones’ signing, a savvy move, ignites Chiefs Kingdom’s 2025 Super Bowl dreams, equipping Mahomes with a fortified defense to dominate the AFC.
