Kansas City, MO – May 15, 2025
The Kansas City Chiefs are shaking up their roster, inviting offensive tackle D.J. Humphries and cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. for tryouts at the 2025 Organized Team Activities, sources confirmed. The star duo aims to fill critical gaps as the team eyes a Super Bowl run.
Humphries, 31, a seasoned left tackle, brings 98 career starts and familiarity from his 2024 Chiefs stint. Despite a 62.0 PFF grade last season, his $1.5 million price tag offers low-risk depth behind Jaylon Moore and rookie Josh Simmons. “D.J.’s a savvy veteran,” coach Andy Reid said.
Samuel, 25, a former Chargers standout, boasts seven interceptions and a 70.5 PFF grade in 2024. At $3 million, the speedy cornerback could bolster a thin secondary led by Trent McDuffie. “Asante’s a playmaker,” defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo noted, eyeing a lockdown addition.
The Chiefs’ draft—Simmons, Omarr Norman-Lott, Ashton Gillotte, Nohl Williams, Jalen Royals, Jeffrey Bassa, and Brashard Smith—added youth, but Humphries and Samuel offer proven talent. With $12.7 million in cap space, the signings align with JuJu Smith-Schuster’s pay cut and Gabe Davis’ addition. GM Brett Veach called it “a strategic test.”
Chiefs Kingdom buzzed with optimism. With two remaining picks, including No. 226, Kansas City targets secondary depth. Humphries and Samuel’s tryouts, a bold move, fuel 2025 Super Bowl dreams, fortifying Patrick Mahomes’ protection and defensive backfield.
