Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has called the Philadelphia Eagles’ signing of edge rusher Josh Uche a “steal,” labeling the veteran a bargain for the defending Super Bowl champions, sources told ESPN on Friday. Uche, who joined the Eagles on a one-year, $10 million deal in free agency, is poised to bolster Philly’s pass rush after a nine-sack season in 2024, split between the New England Patriots and Chiefs.
Reid, speaking at the NFL owners’ meeting, reflected on Uche’s brief stint with Kansas City last season, where he recorded 3 sacks and 12 QB hits in 8 games before becoming a free agent. “Josh is a hell of a player—it’s a steal for Philly,” Reid said, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. “He’s a bargain at that price, and they’re getting a guy who can change games.” The Chiefs, who lost to the Eagles 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX, had hoped to re-sign Uche but couldn’t match Philly’s offer with their $11.8 million cap space.
The Eagles needed pass-rush help after losing Josh Sweat to the Cardinals (4-year, $76.4 million) and with Brandon Graham’s likely retirement looming. Uche, 32, joins a rotation with Nolan Smith Jr. (6.5 sacks in 2024) and Jalyx Hunt, alongside recent signings Azeez Ojulari and Joshua Uche. His 9 sacks in 2024—his fourth-best career mark—and 60.5 career sacks highlight his value as a short-term spark for a team eyeing another title run.
Eagles fans on X are buzzing with excitement. “Reid calling Uche a steal? Howie’s a genius!” posted @EaglesNation. Another fan added, “Uche with Smith Jr.? Our pass rush is back!” (@PhillyFanatic). With $18.125 million in cap space, Roseman’s savvy signing of Uche at $10 million—a discount from his $11 million Lions tag—has Philly primed to defend their Super Bowl crown.
