Bills Undrafted Free Agent Signing Could Spell the End for James Cook in Buffalo

Mississippi State braces for NFL Draft shutout after 2024 struggles - Athlon Sports

The Buffalo Bills made waves post-2025 NFL Draft, signing undrafted free agent wide receiver Kelly Akharaiyi from Mississippi State, a move that could signal the end for running back James Cook. With Cook’s contract saga unresolved, Akharaiyi’s explosive potential offers Josh Allen a new weapon, shifting Buffalo’s offensive identity.

Cook’s $15 million annual demand clashed with Brandon Beane’s $12 million offer, fueling trade rumors after he listed his Orchard Park home for sale. The Bills, prioritizing cap flexibility, leaned on their draft haul and Akharaiyi’s signing to diversify an attack that ranked 20th in rushing yards (1,806) in 2024.

Akharaiyi’s a hidden gem,” Beane told The Buffalo News’ Ryan O’Halloran. “His speed gives Allen options to stretch the field.”

Akharaiyi, 24, ran a 4.37-second 40-yard dash at Mississippi State’s Pro Day, complementing a 38-inch vertical and 20 bench press reps. In 2023 at UTEP, he exploded for 48 receptions, 1,033 yards, and 7 touchdowns, earning first-team All-Conference USA. His 2024 season (25 catches, 391 yards, 2 TDs) was quieter, but his 15.6 yards per catch showcased big-play ability.

“We’ve got a steal,” said NFL Network’s Bucky Brooks. Akharaiyi could push the Bills’ passing game past the Chiefs.”

The Bills’ draft, featuring cornerback Maxwell Hairston and eight others, focused heavily on defense, leaving Cook’s role vulnerable. Akharaiyi joins Khalil Shakir and Keon Coleman, challenging Curtis Samuel for WR3 snaps. His speed aligns with Joe Brady’s RPO scheme, reducing reliance on Cook’s 1,086 rushing yards.

With $5.3 million in cap space, Beane’s offseason—signing Justin Simmons, Tre’Davious White, and trading Dane Jackson—prioritizes versatility. Akharaiyi’s low-cost deal mirrors Atlanta’s Nate Carter coup, offering high upside. If Cook departs, Ray Davis and Akharaiyi could redefine Buffalo’s backfield and passing attack.

As training camp nears, Akharaiyi’s emergence looms large, potentially marking the end of Cook’s tenure. His addition fuels Allen’s 4,306-yard passing arsenal for a 2025 title run.
