Buffalo, NY – April 27, 2025
The Buffalo Bills capped a busy offseason by signing former Los Angeles Chargers running back J.K. Dobbins to a two-year, $8 million deal, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. With Joe Brady reshaping the offense, the move adds depth to a backfield led by James Cook, but Dobbins’ injury history makes it a high-stakes gamble.
Brady, renowned for his balanced attack with the Lions, leaned on running backs like Jahmyr Gibbs. Many expected the Bills to draft an elite running back early to complement Cook, but they waited until Round 7, selecting Maryland’s Roman Hemby. Cook’s $15 million contract demand, unmet by Brandon Beane’s $12 million offer, and his Orchard Park home sale fueled speculation of a potential exit.
“Dobbins brings proven grit,” Beane told The Buffalo News’ Ryan O’Halloran. “He’s a spark for Allen’s offense when healthy.”
Dobbins, 26, ran for 905 yards and nine total touchdowns in 13 games with the Chargers in 2024, leading the team in rushing despite two prior Achilles tears (2020, 2023). Spotrac projects his $4 million annual deal as a bargain, but his injury concerns—he’s never played a full season—loom large for a Bills squad eyeing the Super Bowl.
“It’s a calculated risk,” said NFL Network’s Bucky Brooks. “Dobbins could elevate the Bills, but his health is a wild card.”
The Bills, with $5.3 million in cap space, cut veterans like Dane Jackson to free $7.3 million, absorbing Dobbins’ deal. Paired with Cook’s 1,086 yards and Ray Davis, Dobbins diversifies Brady’s scheme, but his December 2024 absence (four games) raises red flags. If Cook departs, Dobbins could lead Buffalo’s backfield in 2025.
